In ancient times Fuengirola was named Suel and then became Suhayl.  That is where the name of the renowned castle, the focal point and one of many tourist attractions of Fuengirola, Castillo Sohail (Arabic) derived. The castle plays host to many events throughout the year.
Fuengirola is one of the Costa del Sol´s largest tourist destinations with over 60.000 residents. This number almost triples in the months July and August. Situated only 25 km from the capital Malaga, Fuengirola is also the final stop for tourists travelling by train to the Costa del Sol.

There is an amazing assortment of restaurant and bars for all nationalities.  It is far more reasonably priced than the Marbella areas with regards to the cost of living, dining and drinking, with a multitude of hotels including Las Palmeras, El Puerto and Las Pirimedes.  It is only a five minute drive from Mijas golf Course, a ten minute drive from Torrequebrada Golf Course and fifteen minutes to Santa Maria.  The vicinity of Fuengirola is undoubtedly the ‘mecca’ of golfers on the Costa del Sol.
Fuengirola has one international school St. Anthony’s College and the nearest hospital Costa del Sol is only a quarter of an hour drive or in the other direction the Carlos Haya Regional University Hospital in Malaga.
With regards to culture, there is Casa de la Cultura, a branch of the Fuengirola Culture Department holding concerts, exhibitions, conferences and theater performances throughout the year. There is also the English theatre Salon Varieties.
